Website Feedback – Timeless Toys

When we first started planning opening a toy shop we agreed that if we were to make it a success we would really need an e-commerce website to run alongside our bricks and mortar shop. I am far from the most computer literate person and so we began researching how we would go about building and running a website. Dylan and Alex at GoMy were recommended to us a by a friend who had his own website built by GoMy and who was very impressed with the outcome. We contacted GoMy and arranged a meeting with Dylan and Alex. They came to see us and we explained exactly what we wanted and how we wanted it. They listened, understood what we wanted and we spent some time swopping ideas. From then on we pretty much left it in their capable hands. They contacted all our suppliers and collected the images and product specs they needed and put it all together. Once the website was built I went over to the GoMy offices and spent a morning with Dylan and Alex learning how to use the site, update items, add new products and how to use the wordpress side of the site so I could Blog (check me out!!) They also did some fantastic screen casts for me so, if I forgot how to do things, I could go back and watch the videos on how to do them! Since the website has been up and running and left in my hands (!) it has been plain sailing. Occasionally I have had a couple of problems which have been sorted almost immediately by Dylan or Alex. In fact the other day I contacted them on a Sunday morning and got a reply straight away! Their support and expertise has been outstanding. I have had many many compliments on my website, how professional it looks and how easy it is to use! I always recommended GoMy whenever the opportunity presents itself and if you’re considering having an internet site built then – go with GoMy!

GoMySites were different to any other web company we contacted. Having had a number of ecommerce customers in a previous role, I had heard stories of poor rushed jobs, missed deadlines, high spurious costs and no personal service. GoMySites were not only interested in me and my business, they went the extra mile to understand the industry and my competitors. I highly recommend GoMySites to anyone wanting a website, they are friendly, professional, knowledgable, very personable and a pleasure to do business with. We really couldn’t have hoped for a better website and wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to build it.

Meeting these guys has demystified the dark arts of website design and optimisation! From the outset, it was clear that they took the time to understand our business, how we worked and what we needed to achieve, and since then they have delivered on everything we have asked of them ; not only that, they have given back to us a great deal of insight, some very practical ideas and we see this as real added value to our relationship. To add to this, they are great people and speak English rather the Geek!

I was looking around this morning for some posters or prints for our new office walls. I stumbled across some photos from an American photographer called Gregory Crewdson. I’m sure he’s a famous photographer, but i’d never heard of him before.

Wow his photos are something else. After reading about him, he creates these highly elaborate staged photos, creating surreal atmospheric scenes in middle America. Some with a slight touch of sci-fi. I’d love to find somewhere that sells prints of this work.

Simple steps to speed up Magento

After a recent Magento build for a client we were asked the age old problem “My site is running slow for visitors how can we speed this up?”

It’s actually not as complex as you might think to quickly speed up magento without having to do any massive code changes. Other than the obvious stuff like:

Adding a css class to last div using jQuery

This is an issue I come across from time to time, especially when using wordpress or anything else that dynamically produces content.

The scenario is you have a list of posts on a page and you’re not able to add a class to the last item in the list (say to remove a separating border).
